weekly round up

every day i cry about a leather fork

we’re back at it again with five things that have kept my attention this week. i’ll be honest. i went on a weekend bender last weekend and it took the wind out of me. it wasn’t until thursday did i feel a bit like myself. this has eased me into an odd transition into fall as the rain is frequent and the blue in the day is more apparent in hue. but finally, the air is cooled and i’m ready for layers!

  1. leather fork

every day i wake up and cry about this jacquemus leather knife and fork charm that sold for less than $20 on vestiaire. it’s almost ritualistic. the tears. they come fast and easy in the blue light of the morning. why does the loss of a thing that never belonged to you, in the first place, hurt so much? it’s a phantom pain. there and not there, but always on the mind. perhaps one day it will show up again. but not for this ridiculously low price.

  2. the wonderful story of henry sugar - wes anderson

wes anderson is back with a quickie. this time, an adaptation of dahl’s the wonderful story of henry sugar. i’ve always been a fan of dahl’s children’s stories. i was fed them at a young age through sunday library hauls. i love the witches and i love the angelica huston adaptation from 1990. if you haven’t seen it, it’s perfect for spooky season! wes anderson was made to bring dahl’s work to the screen. the whimsy is there, the childlike colors. the pastiche! also, if you haven’t yet, dahl’s short stories are worth checking out. they’re absolutely strange and unhinged!

  3. the land is inhospitable and so are we - mitski

a TON of new music came out. i loved the new olivia rodrigo. the james blake was a good look at how he creates soundscapes. and roisin murphy already released the bangers off her latest with all her singles. but i think the gold stars and brownie points go to the new mitski. i will be listening to it all of fall leading into winter. it is my t swift’s evermore of 2023. HANDS DOWN. also, giving the same energy is sufjan steven’s latest single, will anybody ever love me?

  4. i haven’t done a ton of reading, but if i have done any, it’s our share of night by mariana enriquez, which i’m reading for roisin’s big book club pick (with a youtube live to be announced soon)! i’m about 40% of the way through, and so far so okay! it’s about the father-son relationship meddled with the occult. the dead visit, and there are refrigerators in the cemetery. it’s a lot of fun and when the shockers come, they’re SHOCKING. i just wish more would pull through amidst the heavy relationship building of characters that aren’t worth too much investment. come on mariana!!! gimme more action!

also don’t stress! i’m still on my didion grind. it has been so nice to dip in and out of her prose while getting a reflection of politics and media of the late 80s.

  5. depop

on the other end of secondhand shopping, i’ve been having a lot of fun getting rid of things that deserve a bit more love. glad that a bunch of these tchotchkes are getting the love that they deserve. also, my zine how the music alters is available. it’s also available on big cartel. use code SEXYNOOKER10 for 10% off your purchase when you order from big cartel!
