weekly round up
*first week of sept
*five things from the week.
the boy and the heron, hayao miyazaki
yes! that’s right. a new miyazaki film. when first announced in japan, there was no marketing for the film. no news. no trailer. it just happened. no surprise, it became a box office hit. perhaps this says something about his work and legacy. the visuals. the creatures. in the trailer, as the heron swings low and close into the boy, nearly knocking him down, chills swept across my skin. i’m stoked for this!
a friend from japan who saw it advised you see it in imax. not to be missed. in theaters dec 8th.
club people, alan palomo
fka “neon indian,” i didn’t know he was making a comeback until i saw a video of him in a letterboxd top 4 video. the song is reminiscent of his 2015 record, vega intl night school in its sleaze and woozy beats but with a poppier 80s pinache that makes for a perfect getting-out-of-the-house song.
helmut lang x peter do
there are rare instances when you find humbleness in fashion. peter do, in his quiet nature, debuted his first collection as creative director for helmut lang in new york. he references the old, while bringing in parts of himself. nods made in cab ads. it beckons the old beacon of the classic new york self. of too many cocktails at the white rose bar only to wander through washington square park to find second ave flat and still as morning-becoming.
art is eternity backwards
three didions in three days. slow down, i said. i’m finishing up sheila heti’s motherhood as i’m writing this, and there’s a line i can’t cross out of my mind: art is eternity backwards. how art loops memories round and round in the same way didion’s fictions work in a cyclical fashion. i’ve always wondered, why is the there a snake on the fsg classics edition of play it as it lays? it’s because her stories are like this. she gives her all only to circle around the all to show you her entirety. sometimes i misremember the snake eating itself, but it is there, itself, eternally wound in a circle, as symbol. art is eternity backwards.
samyoukilis for apeture mag
hands down one of my favorite photographers. he captures the beauty in the mundanity, in the very simple. he reframes the way i see the sky. how it frames clouds. or how the clouds can become subject and the sky frames the clouds. calling italy home base for now, he fragments, in working in the very motion of frames per second. i want to say he popularized the instagram stories 9:16 ratio as storytelling. but it’s through his work he has found the dolce vita. he makes me want to look at where i am and feed beauty into the every day.
and that’s a wrap! remember:
be well
do good work
keep in touch
